Martha Jane Harmon, 88, of Richmond passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.

Martha was born on March 6, 1935, in Polo, the daughter of Frances Marion and “Allie” (Davis) Hodson. She was united in marriage to Thomas Edwin Harmon of Richmond on Oct. 3, 1953. He survives of the home.

Additional survivors include: three daughters, Beth Harmon of Richmond, Jane Luper of Kansas City and Mary Wedgeworth of Kansas City; seven grandchildren, Rebekah (Evan Rees) Luper, Rachael (David) Wahl, Nathanael (Alisha) Luper, Benjamin (Melanie) Luper, Anna Luper, Neann Wedgeworth and Thomas Wedgeworth; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bill Hodson; and two sisters, Mary Bilton and Jean Leamer.

Martha was reared and educated in the area of her birth, and she graduated with the class of 1953 from Richmond High School.

In addition to being a housewife and homemaker, she worked for the Richmond R-XVI School District at the middle school for many years as a secretary. In Martha’s youth, she also worked at Mattingly’s Department Store in Richmond.

She was a good seamstress and an avid book reader. Martha was of the Baptist faith, was an active church member and served as church clerk and Sunday School teacher.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Shirkey Hospice. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with funeral services will be held on Friday, March 17, at Richmond First Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., with services to follow at 11. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens Cemetery.
