Larry Hankins

Larry James Hankins, 78, a resident of Richmond, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron. Larry was born on Sept. 29, 1944, in Harrison, Ark., the son of Clovis and Mary (Adams) Hankins. On April 5, 1969, he married Helen Elaine Davis of Elkins, W.Va. She preceded him in death. Survivors include his three sons, Chad (Laurie) Hankins of Carrollton, Derek (Amy) Hankins of Camden and James Hankins of Richmond; daughter, Amanda (Matthew) Ohrt of Richmond; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Connie Robinette of Kearney and Carrol Lewellen of Excelsior Springs; and one half-sister, Carla Strickland of Hot Springs, Ark.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Gary Hankins and Timothy Hankins; and sister, Cheryl Shimmel.

Larry was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He loved to fish, listen to classical music and do crossword puzzles. Above all else, he loved his family. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Veterans Commission (Marine Corps branch) in Larry’s honor. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16, in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville.
