Jimmy Dean Kanoy, 83, of rural Excelsior Springs passed away on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at his home. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Zion Hill Cemetery near Ernestville in Lafayette County, with Jason Kanoy officiating. There was no visitation. Arrangements for a celebration of life event are pending. Memorials are suggested to Zion Hill Cemetery in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home. Jimmy Dean Kanoy was born on May 11, 1940, in Warrensburg to Virgil Kanoy and Zelma “Sally” Hess Kanoy. He attended Concordia Public Schools, graduating in 1959.

He continued his education, receiving degrees from Maplewood Community College and Draughon’s College of Commerce. He was a cartographer for the Defense Mapping Agency from 1959 to 1989.

In January 1961, Jimmy met the love of his life and soulmate, Martha Bruegging. They were united in marriage on April 28, 1962. Their 61 years of marriage was a devoted partnership. It is an example of true unconditional love, lived out for many to see.

Upon retirement, he enjoyed being with family and friends at the Lake of the Ozarks. He was a substitute teacher at Orrick High School. Jim was a gifted artist and drew pencil portraits of family members, retirees and many graduating seniors of OHS, CHS, SPLHS and SFHS.

Jim is survived by his wife, Martha; five children and their spouses, David and Susan Kanoy of St. Louis, Brian and Susan Kanoy of Kansas City, Susan and Norman Rodenberg of Richmond, Linda and Jonathan Souder of Independence, and Jason and Amy Kanoy of Hamilton.

Jim enjoyed spending time with his 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many treasured nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Muriel Beard, Ethylene Frerking, Shirley Brackman and Sammie Kanoy.
