Howard Andrew McDonald, 78, of Richmond died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2021, at Northland Rehabilitation Center in Kansas City.

Howard was born on Oct. 2, 1942, in Richmond, the son of John and Mildred (Brown) McDonald.

Survivors include: two brothers, J.C. (Norma) Brown of Excelsior Springs and Pernell McDonald of Topeka, Kansas; an aunt, Vena Belle Smith of Atlanta; his special friend, Karen Brown; and many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ray Brown and Charles Brown; and two sisters, Addie Mae Huff and Mildred Davis.

Howard was reared and educated in Richmond and graduated in 1960 from Richmond High School. After high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he worked as a certified nurse’s aid at the VA hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Howard owned and operated his own car detailing business in Richmond, McDonald’s Detailing. He also worked at Lake City Arsenal. Howard loved target shooting and participating in martial arts, particularly karate. He was a member of the Masons and belonged to the Masonic lodge in Lexington. He also was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Richmond.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Memorial services with inurnment will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Full military honors to be provided by the Army and the Ray County Veterans. Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond is in charge of the arrangements.
