Dorothy Seward

Seward, Dorothy Maxine (Cowell), 94, passed away on June 28, 2020, in Tucson, Ariz., after a short illness. Dorothy was born Feb. 11, 1926, in Caldwell, Kan., to William and Iva (Davis) Cowell. She was the seventh of their nine children. Dorothy married Warren Dubois Seward in 1942, and they shared 51 happy years. Dorothy and Dubois, as he was known to all, spent their retirement years traveling south in an RV to warmer states, visiting their children and grandchildren on the way. They used proceeds from their front yard farmer’s market and were known for the beautiful produce they grew on a family farm in Camden.

Dorothy had an amazing memory and would share stories about her family and friends with uncanny clarity. Her wit and wisdom were cherished by her family, who kept in close touch, despite distances.

In the busyness of family life, she stayed up to date with her siblings, sending “round robin” letters to them all. Dorothy loved to sew clothes and handmade toys for her family.

She was always young at heart. Dorothy will be remembered fondly by her two children, Terry (Lupe) Seward and Sheila Gilstrap; grandchildren, Jenny (Clay) Routledge, Andy (Emma) Jecmen, Steven Jecmen, Briana Seward and Zachary (Gabi) Seward; and nine great-grandchildren.

Dorothy also is survived by her sister, Lenora Fike of Fort Worth, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by Dubois; her parents; brothers, Raymond Cowell and Roy Cowell; and sisters, Rosa Gerberding, Oralene Briggs, Inez Alexander, Darlene Huffman, and an infant sister, Betty Cowell.

A memorial is to be determined for a future date in Camden.
