David “Dave” Lee Ross, 74, of Richmond passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at KU Medical Center, in Kansas City, Kan. Dave was born on Jan. 7, 1949, in Kansas City, the son of William Lee and Mary Virginia (Williams) Ross. He was first united in marriage to Wanda Marie Proffitt of Camden on Aug. 31, 1967. She preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1988.

He later married Barbara Dale Murphy of Richmond on Aug. 28, 1993. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include: his son, Kent Lee (Amie) Ross of Richmond; daughter, Joani (Jon Thoreson) Ross of Richmond; step-daughter, Mary Dodson of Grain Valley; five grandchildren, Jordan (Aaron) Goodman, Brooke Ross, Julia Dodson, Carson Dodson, Calista Hinojos; one great-grandson, Grayson Goodman; and one great-grandson on the way, Bowen Goodman. His brother, Curtis (Michelle) Ross of Kearney, also survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife. Dave was reared and educated in the area of his birth. He was a 1967 graduate of Orrick High School.

He was in the trucking business for more than 30 years. Dave was a proud member of Teamsters Union Local 41. He also was an auctioneer for 20-plus years. After retiring, most recently, he was a well-known salesman at Swafford’s Ford for many years.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, especially crappie fishing. He could be a little bit ornery and was known to be a prankster at times. He enjoyed spending time at BP with his buddies for coffee.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond. Most of all, Dave was proud of all his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandson.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the family’s choice. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with memorial services were held on Thursday, May 11, at the First Baptist Church in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m., followed by services at 2. Inurnment followed the services in Richmond Memory Gardens.
