Billy was born on Nov. 7, 1955, in Lexington, the son of James Howard and Virginia Frances (Brockert) Darnell. After graduating with the class of 1972 from Lexington High School, Billy began working in construction at Bolivar Construction. This would lead to him embarking on the accomplishment of starting and owning his own business, Darnell Guttering. Billy took tremendous pride in his hard work as the 30-year business owner of this successful construction company. That same work ethic of his was evident in the many achievements of his three kids, and nothing made him prouder than to watch them work hard for those successes.

In his free time, you could find Billy in the great outdoors. Whether he was counting down the days until mushroom season, hunting and fishing with his kids or diligently tending his garden, he was an outdoorsman through and through. Consistent with his love for nature, sunsets and thunderstorms rolling in were among his favorites.

While home in the evenings, you might find him with a hand towel over his shoulder, singing and dancing along to the kitchen radio while cooking. He never missed an opportunity to quote a favorite Rocky movie or ask the infamous question, “Who’s the man?” that was always more of a reminder of a security his children knew from his fierce love.

Survivors include: two sons, Derek Darnell of Richmond and Kyle (Amber) Darnell of Richmond; a daughter, Alysha (Joshua) Brown of Warrensburg; 11 grandchildren, Jayce, Vayah, Raiden, Gracelynn, Griffin, Macklin, Abigale, Liam, Dawson, Hazel and Tilly; and his beloved companion, his dog Hank.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, Gary Darnell and Larry Darnell.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Billy Darnell Memorial Fund. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.
