Barbara Sue Hutchings, 76, of Richmond passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2024, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Barbara was born May 5, 1947, in St. Joseph, the daughter of James Thomas “Bud” and Joy LaVerne (Olson) Dorton.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth A. “Kenny” Hutchings of Orrick on Feb. 21, 1970. He preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 2011.

Survivors include her daughter, Katie Hutchings of Richmond; grandson, Kenneth James “K.J.” Desselle; sister, Phyllis Jeffries of Orrick; and sister-in-law, Cathy Dorton of Cordova, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, James “Stanley” Dorton; and brother-in-law, Bill Jeffries.

Barbara was reared and educated in Orrick and graduated from Orrick High School.

She was a wonderful boss and enjoyed getting things done. Barbara was an amazing mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Richmond United Christian Presbyterian Church. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with memorial services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. and services to follow at 2. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
