RICHMOND – The sun is barely up when John Johnson, Lexington, climbs out of bed and makes the drive across the Missouri River to Ray County. He is the first in the food line at the edge of the Salvation Army Family Store parking lot in Richmond. “I got here a little before 7,” Johnson says. A bit more than eight hours after Johnson’s arrival, Salvation Army volunteers, all in masks, work on both sides of his red Ford pickup truck. They hustle to get bags of food into the back of Johnson’s truck. Harvesters allows 90 minutes from the time the food arrives until distribution. As the first to arrive, Johnson is the first to leave. Behind him, snaking north along North Shaw Street, are dozens of vehicles containing people from Excelsior Springs, Richmond, Orrick, Higginsville and elsewhere in at least a three-county area.
