Virus up, down in Richmond schools

RICHMOND – Richmond School District’s COVID-19 numbers are fluctuating. Quarantined high school students declined by 43, to five. Quarantined middle school students rose from 22 to 43 cases. Operating differences account for why the high school is closed and the middle school is open, Superintendent Greg Darling said Tuesday. Unlike middle schoolers, high schoolers move between classes, creating more opportunities to spread the virus. “At the high school, you could be in one class in one period, and in the next period, you could be in a different class,” Darling said. In keeping with a transparency practice, district administrators stated Monday a person at Sunrise Elementary School had tested positive for COVID-19. Contract tracing followed. The district is protecting the identities of those infected, which is in step with regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPPA.
