RICHMOND – Those driving or walking around South Street and Missouri Highway 13 on a Friday night might see the field lights on at the Richmond High School football and track stadium, depending on the time. At 8:20 p.m. every Friday through May 17, the Richmond School District is honoring the class of 2020 by lighting the stadium. Aimee Bowman, language arts teacher/student council sponsor, said the field is being lit for 20 minutes, 20 seconds. That time frame was chosen because 8:20 p.m. is 2020 on a military clock (also on a 24-hour clock), Bowman explained during an April 10 phone interview. May 17 was chosen because that was when Graduation Day was scheduled, she said. This year’s seniors cannot participate in the annual tradition of Graduation Day, at least not on the original schedule, because the coronavirus pandemic has forced Richmond schools to remain closed through the rest of the 2019-20 school year, as the district website states.
