School district faces deficit lunch accounts again
Richmond R-XVI School District finds its students’ lunch balances negative again even after Richmond High School (RHS) students raised funds.
District Operations Director Jeff Southwick reported the school has a deficit of $250 during a recent meeting of the school board.
The discussion arose after board member Karmen Dooley asked about the lunch debt fundraiser where RHS National Honor Society (NHS) students raised almost $7,000.
“Are we on top of it? Everybody’s following the policy and we’re not going backward?” asked Dooley.
Southwick noted the district was indeed going backward.
“We bailed them out and they continued down the same road,” said the operations director.
When asked if the schools were using the updated policies about school lunches, Southwick explained students get “leeway” and can only have a negative balance of $10. At this point, they are switched to the alternative meal which, still costs money.
