RICHMOND – Everyone agrees they like the change of venue this year, moving out of the Eagleton Building and across the parking lot to the shaded lawn at the Ray County Museum. The day is warm, but not a typical July scorcher. A cool breeze blows through the trees while girls and boys wait to show off clothing they created or purchased. Judging takes place 11 steps up from the lawn to the museum’s porch. There, judges Cindy Taber and Ann Simpson learn Lydia Friedrich, 12, is in her fifth year as a contestant. “You made your dress?” Taber asks. In a strapped black dress covered in printed roses, Friedrich answers, “Yes, I did.” “What can you tell us about it?” Taber asks. “That a polyester knit is not fun to sew with,” Friedrich answers and has no intention of ever repeating the effort.
