Parson seeks to undo Clean Missouri vote; Galloway wants to honor public’s statewide decision

COLUMBIA – Missouri’s most prominent party leaders are on opposite sides of Amendment 3, the call to change the public’s 2018 vote on Clean Missouri. Clean Missouri included a provision that has become controversial – how to decide where people vote to give fairer representation to each party. For most people, no change is expected. The decision on where people vote, and in some cases for which candidates they can vote, is called redistricting, which will follow this year’s census. Before Clean Missouri, a committee drew boundaries for legislative districts. Under that plan, Republicans received far more than proportional representation in the General Assembly. A Gallop Poll found 39.3% of Missourians are Democrats and 43.8% are Republicans, but 70% of House members and 76% of Senate members are Republicans. Under a voter-approved plan, a professional demographer appointed by the Senate would draw lines designed to more closely reflect the public’s political affiliation. Missouri…
