Orrick school asks voters to approve $950,000 energy issue

ORRICK – The Orrick School District asks voters to approve a ballot issue June 2 to upgrade energy efficiency within school buildings. The upgrades would not require either a tax increase or a tax extension, district Superintendent Scott Archibald said. “We have a lease payment for the energy project that we did last year,” Archibald said. “All we’re looking to do is a no-tax bond to pay that off, and then put that into our debt service, instead of paying that out of our operating fund.” Last year, the district made improvements that included replacing the elementary school roof, providing cost-saving LED lighting districtwide, installing solar panels, weatherizing the building and tuckpointing, he said. Money for the work came out of the operating fund in the form of a lease, Archibald said. The district asks voters to shift the cost of the lease out of operating funds and into the debt service fund. The only difference is the transition from one fund to another to pay the lease. …
