RICHMOND – Ray County Memorial Hospital is asking the public for direct assistance in fighting the coronavirus by making medical masks.

“It’s a good concept,” hospital Administrator Earl Sheehy said Tuesday.

The hospital is trusting the public to create masks that meet health recommendations for use in some parts of the facility.

“They’re not the same as what we would normally use, but they’re a good backup,” Sheehy said.

The masks are for the public, he said. “To assist with the shortage of personal protective equipment, we will accept homemade masks meeting certain specifications,” hospital information states. “These would not be used on frontline staff, but there are other areas in the hospital that these would work just fine.”

For example, Sheehy said, the masks might be used by visitors waiting in a patient recovery area.

Directions on how the public can help by using the correct materials to make masks and directions on how to make the masks are on the hospital’s website at http:// The public can use the same site to make masks for themselves, friends and families.
