Horse proves popular at library

RICHMOND – Rancher Janet Aldrich of Aldrich Quarter Horses in Excelsior Springs brought her horse Gus for an equine meet-and-greet in the Ray County Library’s parking lot. About 50 children and adults attended the “Hooves & Tales” program, the last major community program at Ray County Library before the coronavirus. The event expanded on the library’s weekly Family Story Time and took place in conjunction with the National Education Association’s Read Across America initiative. Prior to the show, Aldrich talked to children about caring for horses. Library Director Stacy Hisle said Gus proved popular. “The kids got to pet him, feed him, learn what he eats and more,” Hisle said. His “trick” was also a big hit – giving a “big, toothy grin” in exchange for a treat. Aldrich also set up a couple of saddles on stands, so kids could get the feel of riding without actually getting on Gus.
