Hobbled absentee voting bill limps to final-day passage

JEFFERSON CITY – What passed in the last 25 minutes of this year’s General Assembly session did less than hoped to make voting safer and easier, but helped, state Rep. Peggy McGaugh said. The original bill presented by Mc-Gaugh – a Republican and a former Carroll County clerk who has overseen elections – had aimed to do more. Her no-excuse, absentee voting bill sounded little like the restrictive measure the Republican-controlled Missouri House and Senate approved Friday, May 15. “Is my language in this bill? Yes and no,” she said. “Some things got taken out and some things got added in.” Debate on the bill kept the House working until around 3 a.m. Friday. The marathon session included heated moments, with McGaugh and House Elections Committee Chairman Dan Shaul, R-Imperial, disagreeing on provisions in his version of the bill.
