KANSAS CITY – Senior members of the student-led Youth With Vision, or YWV, substance prevention advocacy council offer young people coping skills to handle the stress of being quarantined during the COVID-19 challenge. “This can be such an anxious time for our youth, and our members wanted to reach out to help in some way,” Sherri Miller said. Miller is a Tri-County Mental Health youth prevention specialist and coordinator of YWV. “Our student members have been concerned that their peers might turn to substances to deal with the increased stress and anxiety.” Members made 10 short videos to showcase their preferred substance-free coping strategies. Skills are geared for use in school or at home by students in third to eighth grades. The three-to-four-minute videos are available to all elementary and middle schools and administrators in Clay, Platte and Ray counties.
