DEFINING PRIORITIES: 911 board considers new building; sheriff prefers radio equipment

RICHMOND – The 911 board heard criticism from Sheriff Scott Childers in January when he did not get money for more communication equipment. The board responded in February, saying the department got communication equipment money under the former sheriff and must address more pressing issues; and Childers is having another go at explaining his position. The board did not meet in March for lack of enough members. But Childers during an interview last week said lack of communication equipment threatens safety. NOT THE TOP PRIORITY A board survey found at least another $768,000 would be needed to meet the communication needs of the county’s first responders, which is not the board’s top budget priority, President Paul Harris said during the February meeting. “Quite staggering,” he said. “Quite staggering,” he said. “I don’t know if that was all (the money wanted),” 911 Director Kim Davis said. “That’s a tremendous outlay of money,” Harris said.
