County, sheriff reviewing food service options for jail
County leaders are exploring whether or not they should change food service providers for the Ray County Jail.
Sheriff Scott Childers and Undersheriff Steve Mendoza raised that issue on July 15 during the Ray County Commission meeting in the courthouse. The jail’s contract with Summit Food Service of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, expires at the end of August and prices have increased because of inflation, like other products and services have, Childers said.
On the other hand, Childers is “very satisfied with” Summit. Elizabeth Sharkey, Childers’ contact at Summit, “is amazing,” he said.
“She does a lot for us,” Childers said.
Sharkey, who has worked with the jail for a year as a food service manager, prepares meals for the inmates, Childers said. She also ensures they’re getting their proper caloric intake and ensures those with diabetes and/or blood sugar issues are getting what they need, he said.
