County considers CARES grants for businesses

RICHMOND – Having received requests from schools and other government groups for federal aid, the Ray County Commission expects them to ask for more money, and businesses might seek a share, too. The federal government provided the commission with $2.7 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act, funding. In early October, this newspaper revealed the county had distributed just 19.6%, of that money, about $531,000. Washington gave the county until the end of the year to distribute or return the money. Ray County Treasurer Melissa Holloway said the county expects more money requests, but may have enough to also bankroll a small business grant program. Presiding Commissioner Bob King said the county is working toward a grant program. Businesses would apply to cities for financial aid.
