Community workshop highlights early season gardening methods

Despite cooler temperatures lingering, community members are already beginning the growing season, starting seeds and preparing for planting. A recent workshop hosted by Special Needs Services (SNS) of Ray County as part of its Community Connections series was held at the Ray County Library and focused on cold weather planting, seed starting and early season garden preparation. Participants of all experience levels attended to learn practical techniques for beginning the growing season before warmer temperatures arrive. SNS staff member Stephen Arnold explained gardening begins well before planting, starting with understanding the natural cycle between seasons and preparing the soil as winter transitions into spring. He emphasized the importance of replenishing soil after the colder months, noting natural materials such as leaves, ash and mulch can be used to restore nutrients and prepare garden beds for the growing season.
