It isn’t very often that someone in Richmond reaches their 100th birthday but Wilma Carter of Richmond just celebrated 100 years of life with her friends and family this past Saturday at the Methodist Church on Main St. “I don’t feel any different,” Wilma giggled, noting she made it to 100 years old by not partaking of alcohol or cigarettes. “I have depended on God. You must believe in Him and He will help you,” she noted about her longevity. Wilma was born in 1923 in her home near Norborne. On the school bus during her senior year of high school, she met her future husband, Payton Junior Carter. The young couple got married in the 1940s in Joplin with Payton’s brother, Earl Carter, along with Wilma’s preacher and mother in attendance. “We went to Joplin because my sister was at school there,” said Wilma.
