Vantrump looks to freshmen to help manage injury bug

An influx of first-year high schoolers might help offset the loss of two players Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump and her Spartans experienced during the offseason. Vantrump, now in her second season, is without Sydney Appleberry and Genevieve Didier, both of whom are sidelined by injuries they suffered during summer basketball. Appleberry, a senior; and Dider, a sophomore, were “two key players” last season, Vantrump acknowledged during a Nov. 6 practice at Sunrise Elementary School. Appleberry and Didier helped the Spartans finish as Class 4 District 15 runners-up. They also helped the Spartans go 15-12 – their first season to finish above .500 since 2015-16, when they finished 25-4, Missouri State High School Activities Association records state. Paige Logsdon, Haylee and Kaitlin Marrant, Jazmyn Schroder and Maya Griffin are the first-year high schoolers who might help fill those losses.
