There are problems with the press conferences President Trump has held to provide updates on the coronavirus – including attacking the press and calling on One America News network reporters – who toss him softball questions in a hardball environment – but he rightly deserves credit for also taking real questions from real reporters. Sometimes, he also allows follow-up questions. Politicians should always be open to press questions, and at no time is this more critical than when the country is in a crisis. With more than a half-million Americans having been infected by the coronavirus, with more than 26,000 of those people having died, with health care workers lacking tools to treat patients, with millions left jobless and thousands upon thousands of businesses in jeopardy of closing permanently, this is a crisis that contains myriad sub-crises that call out to the people in charge, the government, to administer solutions that solve serious problems.
