Richard David Smith, 46, of Independence died Monday, April 26, 2021, at his home.

Richard was born on Feb. 20, 1975, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Hugh David and Marsha Jean (Carlson) Smith.

Survivors include: his fiancée, Kristin Wiebold of Alaska; brother, Nathan Allan (Tiffany) Smith of Independence; sister, Mary Ellen Fields of Independence; nephew, Aiden Fields; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard grew up on a farm about 10 miles north of Richmond. He attended Richmond schools until the seventh grade and then was home schooled. After graduating high school, he attended both Wentworth and William Jewell.

Richard attended the South Crysler Restoration Branch of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a deacon in the church. Richard was a talented musician and a prolific writer.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the donor’s choice or the church. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, at the South Crysler Restoration Branch. Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond is in charge of the arrangements.
