Gary Rogers
Gary Ray Rogers, 72, of Lexington, passed away Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, at University Health Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born Nov. 6, 1951, in Lexington, the son of Elmer O’Dean and Teressa Mae (Phipps) Rogers. Survivors include his three sons, Dakota Ray Rogers (Jade Reynolds) of Independence, Jacob Terra Rogers (John Schwermer) of Marshall and Andrew Dierkens of Kansas City; and four grandchildren, Delaney Ray Rogers, Trent Magee, Lucian Stewart and Caden Rogers- Smith. Other survivors include three sisters, Marlene Skiles and Darlene McMillan (Dean Askren), both of Richmond, and Terri (Chris) Keeler of Rayville; the mother of his children, Diana Butler; and his partner, Suzanne Rogers of the home and her children, Tanya Adams, Beth Ainsworth, Charles “Chuck” Carter and Rona Reade. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and countless friends who loved him dearly also survive.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Michael David Rogers; brothers-in-law, Andy Skiles and Bruce McMillan; great-niece, Hanna Scott Skiles-Smith; and a great-nephew, Jayce Christopher Keeler.
Gary was reared and educated in the area of his birth and graduated in 1969 from Richmond High School.
Throughout his career, Gary dedicated himself to the agricultural field, a profession that connected him deeply to the land he loved. Later, he worked as a custodian for the Richmond R-XVI School District, a role that brought him great joy and where he was a beloved figure among the students.
Although he spent most of his life in his hometown, Gary’s adventurous spirit led him to spend time in California and Florida, making him well-traveled and worldly. His true passion was fishing. It was more than just a hobby for Gary; it was a way of life. Whether by the banks of a quiet stream or on a boat in open water, he found peace and fulfillment in casting his line. In his younger years, Gary also enjoyed hunting and could often be found tinkering with various projects, always eager to fix or improve something.
Gary never met a stranger and always had an outstretched hand for those in need. His warm presence could brighten any room, and he had a special gift for making people laugh, even in their darkest moments.
A devout believer in God, Gary loved his family with all his heart. He embraced life with passion, living on his own terms, and made the most of each day. While a day spent fishing was his ideal, he was just as happy working on the farm, often reminding others, “Ya gotta make hay while the sun shines.”
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Gary Rogers Memorial Fund. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.
