Youth baking program builds confidence one recipe at a time

With grocery prices climbing and boxed foods becoming the default for busy families, a new 4-H baking program is teaching kids how to start with basic ingredients and understand what can be done with them. The three-session Baking from Scratch with 4-H series will take place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Eagleton Center in Richmond. Open to kids ages 8-18, the program will begin Jan. 10 with a focus on cookies, Jan. 24 for an all-about-pies session and Jan. 31 for pasta and simple breadsticks. University of Missouri Extension Youth Program Associate Amanda Cringan noted the program idea grew from observing similar baking events in neighboring counties and wanting to expand the concept to address the challenges families face today. “The concept of Baking from Scratch with 4-H came from various ideas, like a neighboring county was hosting a 4-H pie-making day for their 4-H members,” said Cringan. “I took that idea and wanted to create something more, especially with food…
