On Sept. 9, the Richmond VFW gave a presentation at Sunrise Elementary about one of the nation’s most iconic symbols: the American flag. Trish Fields, Don Lake and Jim Rippy represented the VFW, teaching fourth-graders how to take care of the American flag and explaining its importance. The antsy youngsters trickled out of the front doors and lined up in front of the three. Fields asked them about their knowledge of the flag and discussed how to handle the flag. Fields described the flag as a “partner” or a “comrade.” She did this to let the students know they should treat the flag with a respect similar to what they show their friends. In addition, “rules” for caring for the flag were shared. They included the following don’ts: - Don’t let the flag touch the ground. - Don’t fly the flag upside down, unless there’s an emergency. - Don’t carry the flag flat or carry items in it. - Don’t use the flag as clothing. - Don’t store the flag where it can get dirty. - Don’t use it as…
