MARC funds Senior Center food delivery service
RICHMOND – The temporary food delivery program for area seniors, which has resulted in praise from recipients, is being phased out, Ray County Senior Center Director Pat Mills said.
“They say they’re really liking the meals,” she said.
“One lady, who gets (fresh lunches), said there’s always something that she enjoys; and 90% of the time, she enjoys the whole meal,” center worker Sandy Burns said.
The Mid-America Regional Council, a multi-county organization based in Kansas City, for years funded lunches served at the Senior Center. But when COVID-19 concerns closed the center, the council had no program for delivering food to seniors.
Mills started a new program immediately on behalf of the center. She worked in cooperation with the Ray County Commission and community businesses, organizations and individuals. The united effort led to delivering lunches to more than 50 seniors.
The program costs up to $1,000 per week, a hefty sum for the community alone to manage.
