Departmentalization highlights shared

To help transition fifth-graders into sixth grade, Sunrise Elementary fifthgrade teachers have come together to discuss highlights from their departmentalization at the latest R-XVI Richmond School District board meeting. In the past, each teacher had to teach all curricula; now the curriculums are divided per teacher. “I asked them to present highlights because these ladies have really planned and now have implemented a full quarter of a new kind of structure of instruction for fifth grade. They have chosen to be departmentalized,” said Sunrise Elementary Principal Sara Terrill. “They came to me last fall and said they wanted to do it. These ladies have done a fabulous job at that and have done excellent on the fly to come up with ideas.” Sunrise Elementary fifthgrade teachers Paige Higgins, Deborah McCoy, Miranda Taylor, Tara Fugate, Lindsey Adams and Kendra Peet presented their specific teachings, which are reading, science, math, writing, social studies, and special education. …
