‘Mentally tough’ H-C girls fall short to Braymer

Hardin-Central varsity girls basketball coach Tommy Burton got to see another example of his girls’ mental toughness during their 36-30 Dec. 21 home loss to Braymer. Braymer threatened to pull away during the second half, staging a 15-0 thirdquarter run. The Bulldogs responded by chipping away and making it a two-point ballgame twice during the fourth quarter before the Bobcats scored four points down the stretch to pull off the win. “That’s what we’re learning is we’re very mentally tough,” Burton said. “We can handle those runs. We just haven’t yet got over the hump of getting over those runs and taking the lead back.” Individually, teammates Ester Kincaid and Zoey Polk attribute their mental toughness to trying to win for someone special in their lives. For Polk, a junior post player, that special person is one of her grandfathers – Thomas Twyman, a former coach. “He helps me through a lot of basketball stuff,” Polk said.
