Sparked by ‘pretty intense’ halftime talk, ’Cats roll past Chiefs

ALMA – At halftime, Orrick coach Kirk Thacker gave his Bearcats his blunt opinion of how they played the first half of their Oct. 22 meeting with Santa Fe. “I was not very happy with our performance the first half,” Thacker said. “Our intensity level was not where I thought it should be.” The Bearcats, who led 28-22 at halftime, responded by shutting out the Chiefs the second half and getting a 48-22 road win. “It was pretty intense, if I say so myself,” junior Milo Nay said. “But we carried his intensity out on the football field and we executed.” The half that led to the halftime talk went like this: • Orrick took an 8-0 lead on Nolan Werle’s 4-yard TD run and Blake Buchanan’s two-point conversion pass to Ashton Toland with 8 minutes, 13 seconds left in the first quarter. • The Chiefs staged a nine-play, 53- yard drive, capped by Cole Hostetter’s 5-yard TD run with 4:25 remaining, to cut Orrick’s lead to 8-6. • Chanler Woods’ 11-yard TD run with 3:20 left in the first quarter…
