Sims goes to bat to keep Orrick softball going

Chase Sims wanted to coach Orrick High School softball for one primary reason. “I wanted these girls to have a season,” Sims said March 12. “And if we don’t have a coach, unfortunately, we don’t get to have a season.” That season got underway last week. The Bearcats opened March 19 with a 17-0 home loss to Crest Ridge, followed by a 16-0 loss to Wellington-Napoleon March 20 at Napoleon. The girls finished the week March 22-23 with the Santa Fe Snowflake Classic at Alma, falling 5-4 to Midway March 22 and 15-0 to Concordia March 23, records on MaxPreps.com state. ALOOKAHEAD Sims, who succeeds Taylor Golden and is the program’s sixth head coach since Orrick began offering spring softball in 2017, sees potential in the Bearcats. “I know we’ve had some down years over the past few seasons, but … I think these girls are ready to try really hard and give a lot of effort,” he said.
