Kusters keeps on runnin’

In May, Mason Kusters ran his last race for Orrick High School. In a few months, however, he might run his first race in college. Kusters, who graduated May 7, last represented Orrick in the boys 3,200-meter relay at Class 1 state competition at Jefferson City High School. The Bearcats finished 16th in 9 minutes, 24.55 seconds. This winter, Kusters signed a letter of intent to run cross country and track at William Jewell College, a private, Libertybased NCAA Division II program. The scholarship he received for signing will cover 82 percent of his expenses, he said. “I had visited the school last year, first semester, and I didn’t really hear anything … (back from) them. They never contacted me,” said Kusters, who plans to study communications at William Jewell. “And then, out of the blue, they wanted me.” Kusters moves from high school to college after only two years of high school track – and no experience running cross country because Orrick doesn’t have a cross country…
