Ich spreche Deutsch — at least during pickleball

I’m hoping to add an element to my pickleball game: I’m learning German. Understandably, many of you are probably wondering how learning German can help me play better pickleball. Obviously, it won’t help with my serve, dink shots, etc. But most likely, it’ll help me with the emotional phase of the sport. As I believe I mentioned long ago in at least one column, I sometimes get frustrated when I play, as those in the group in which I play will attest. Jon Dana – or “Jonessy,” as I call him in playful response to him calling me “Shawnessy” – attributes that to my passion for pickleball. I’ve released that frustration (or “passion”) in various nonverbal ways – generally by flipping my paddle in disbelief/disgust or slamming it on the court. Sometimes, those displays come across as comical. Other times, not so much – and I’ve rightly been called out for my behavior. Sometimes, I’ve released my frustration verbally.
