Bates County plane crash claims local resident

A Richmond resident was among 12 people killed Sunday after a skydiving aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Butler Memorial Airport. Family members identified Dane Cordes, 26, as one of 11 skydivers killed in the crash. The pilot was also one of the deceased. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the incident. NTSB Vice Chairman Michael Graham said the Pacific Aerospace P750XL aircraft crashed on airport property shortly after departing Butler Memorial Airport during its initial climb. He added a postcrash fire destroyed the aircraft and identified the flight as a Part 91 skydiving operation. Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson noted authorities were treating the incident as a mass casualty event while investigators worked to identify victims and notify family members.
