Steele sinks game-winner in thriller with Lexington

It’s not necessarily bad when life doesn’t go as planned, as Richmond varsity girls coach Kaylee Vantrump would probably attest after the Spartans’ 39-37 courtwarming victory Lexington. With 15.5 seconds left in the final quarter of the Feb. 13 Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC)-East Division showdown and the score knotted at 37, Richmond called timeout. Vantrump drew up a play in the huddle for the Spartans to attempt to the game-winning shot. “We actually didn’t do what we drew up,” she said. The reason the Spartans didn’t stick to the script was because they “found an open shot early in the set,” Vantrump said. Ella Steele was the open shooter. With only a few seconds left, the senior launched a long-range two-point attempt and sank what proved to be the gamewinning bucket. “When I saw that I was open, I just looked for the ball, and then, I just shot it and hoped that it went in,” Steele said. “I cut to the open spot and just looked for it.” The ball “felt good” leaving…
