Sam was born July 12, 1944, in Orrick, the fifth child of Edgar and Naomi (Heath) Green.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Camden.
He attended Orrick, Ogg, Liberty and Camden schools, finally returning to Orrick.
He was united in marriage to Gale Jean Halterman of Hardin on April 17, 1965.
Sam is survived by his three children, Sam (Karry) Green Jr., Vickie (Ross) Dale and Ed (Laura) Green, all of Richmond; and 11 grandchildren, 34 greatgrandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie “Grace” Millsap and Jwanita Noble; three greatgrandchildren, Amber High, William Davis and Emberlee Green; and his loving wife.
Sam lived all his life in or around Ray County. He started out working at several gas stations, full and part time, and worked at Lake City for 10 years as a tool setter and forklift driver. He also worked at Green Quarries and Hunt’s Midwest Mining for 20 years as a truck driver, and was a member of Teamsters Local 541, as of 1973.
Sam always loved old cars. He bought and restored several of them over the years. Along with that, he belonged to several area car clubs. They included River Valley Cruisers of Lexington, Country Cruisers of Orrick, Sons of Thunder of Excelsior Springs and National DeDudes. He was the founder of Hardtime Rodders of Richmond.
Sam also was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 57 and IOOF No. 208, both of Richmond.
After retirement, Sam started collecting and restoring gas pumps, pedal cars and pedal tractors. He also collected old gas station signs, oil cans, bottles and Disney characters.
In his final years, he found joy in drinking coffee with his friends every morning and playing cards several days a week.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association.
There will be a celebration of life 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Green’s Towing, 1012 W. Main St., Richmond.
