Local 4-H club receives grant to help feed kids
In the Richmond school system, it has become evident some children experience food insecurity, relying heavily on the meals provided during school hours and often lacking access to food outside of that time. Despite receiving assistance from organizations like Harvesters, the support frequently falls short of meeting all the children’s needs.
Guys & Gals 4-H Club applied for the Missouri Farmers Care — Drive to Feed Kids matching grant last fall and were fortunate enough to be selected for a $250 matching grant. During each club meeting from December to April, members voted on which food items to collect for the next meeting. The focus was on gathering items that were easy to open and prepare, requiring no additional ingredients or just water. Some of the collected items included fruit cups, applesauce, Jello, pudding cups, macaroni and cheese cups, granola bars, ramen noodles, pop tarts, cereal and soup.
