From gym to principal’s office
For 35 years, Richmond Middle School (RMS) Principal Staci Maddux has committed her life to shaping young minds and developing future leaders. From the moment she chose to become a teacher and coach in eighth grade, there was never any doubt in her mind about her path. Inspired by her middle school coach, Marcia Roberson, Maddux aimed to invest in students just as her mentors had invested in her.
Maddux began her career in 1992, when Dick Michaels took a chance on a young 22-year-old fresh out of college, hiring her as an In-School Suspension (ISS) teacher. Over the next two years, she transitioned into teaching health, pushing a rolling cart from room to room until she eventually moved into physical education full-time. For 30 years, she shaped the physical and personal development of students in the Richmond Middle School gym while also coaching volleyball, basketball and softball.
