Ray County leaders take look at aspects of reopening offices

RICHMOND – Before reopening this week, after being closed by COVID-19 for more than a month, Ray County officeholders discussed concerns, including anticipated budget cuts and public safety.
One issue involved having offices deep cleaned. Presiding Commissioner Bob King said the cost made the idea impractical.
“It was kind of enormous, so we backed off,” he said. “We don’t want to put ourselves in a bind with the budget.”
Commissioner Allen Dale said all expenses must be examined, including items budgeted previously.
“We’re taking a hard look at everything we order from now through the end of the year,” he said.
Lagging sales tax receipts are causing concern. With businesses having closed, March and April sales tax receipts are expected to be down statewide, which means less money for government services, including for county law enforcement and road work.
