Anti-drug, pro-mental health programs aid sheriff’s office

HENRIETTA – The Ray County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with Tri-County Mental Health to reduce mental health threats that could lead to criminal activities and personal anguish. Since November, two inmates have committed suicide in the jail, the latest occurring Feb. 17. Tri-County Mental Health assigned a clinician, Emily Adler, one day per week to talk with inmates and as needed with staff. Adler performs the same service with the Excelsior Springs Police Department. “If we have anybody having issues in the jail, she goes and talks with them,” Sheriff Scott Childers said. Adler is available to go on calls with deputies, too, he said. “Obviously, we make sure the scene’s safe,” Childers’ said, but she may help a person on scene “if they’re in crisis or (with) getting them to a mental health hospital. It’s a wonderful program.” The office needed Tri-County’s help, he said, with the two latest suicides – others occurred before Childers became sheriff – being among the reasons…
