Girls coach moves from bleachers to bench
HARDIN – First-year varsity girls basketball coach Annie Finley has known her Bulldogs for years.
One Bulldog has known Finley for a lifetime: senior post player and daughter Morgan Finley.
Having a mother as a coach gave Morgan Finley some cause for concern the first day of practice, she said Nov. 8 in the Hardin-Central gym.
“It’s weird having my mom as a coach,” she said. “But so far, I’ve really liked it and I’ve learned a lot.”
No doubt, Morgan Finley has learned to not expect special treatment.
“I’ve had to run a couple times because I said something to her or called her ‘Mom,’” she said.
Fellow senior Alyssa Rechtermann likes having the elder Finley as the new coach. She is used to seeing her at games. And not just high school games.
“She’s seen us play since, like, third grade,” Rechtermann said. “So she knows what we need to work on.”
