Teachers highlight reading curriculum

Dear Elementary Title 1 Teacher Brittany Horine and Dyslexia/Reading Interventionist Trish Gorham talked about reading curriculums during the Richmond R-XVI School Board last week. The two discussed the Lexia Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) and UFLI Foundations. “LETRS is a way of teaching students how to read. It teaches you strategies and the science behind what it is that we need to be able to teach our kids to read. It’s not just day by day like do this day, do that day,” said Horine. “It literally gives a teacher strategies and ways that our brains learn to read through the science that’s been learned through many people throughout the world, which is new research that’s kind of came along.” The reading program requires teachers to have five in-person training session hours dedicated outside the classroom, three case study students; and once teachers complete their years of training, they will be LETRS certified. “It gives teachers tools,…
