Two local elementary teachers are helping students and parents to strengthen bonds through the process of creating ceramic art. In 2005, art teachers Bea Hendrix from Dear Elementary School and Spencer Barr from Sunrise Elementary School started hosting Family Clay Night at their schools. “I’ve been in art for 20 years and I’ve always liked clay because my grandmother had a ceramics shop growing up,” Hendrix said. “Over the years, parents have often asked us to teach clay artwork and I thought it would be fun.” Hendrix said the class gives parents a chance to bond with students, tour the campus, along with the rare opportunity of meeting her since she never sees parents as she is not a traditional classroom teacher. “I want them to see the room and what we do here,” she said. According to Hendrix, students in attendance can usually been found laughing and chatting as they glaze their clay creations and compliment each other’s work.
