Amid settling dust after the former Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers was put on administrative leave on March 7, current Ray County Undersheriff Steve Mendoza shared an update on the department. “As far as day to day and our special programs go – patrol, investigations and detention are still functioning, business as usual. Also, with Ray County Sheriff and Coroner Bartley Willim’s permission, our cyber and human trafficking teams are also business as usual,” said Mendoza. On March 7, Childers was removed from office under criminal investigation and is on paid administrative leave. This comes at the hands of Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey via petition of quo warranto. On March 7, Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), Kansas City FBI and Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) showed up at the Ray County Jail – allegedly searching for contraband in the jail.
