Sheriff talks mystery boxes behind jail

Ray County residents were left with questions about a picture of two small building structures outside of the Ray County Sheriff’s Department after Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers made a Facebook post about them. “I wanted to leave some suspense and get some excitement about it,” he said. The sheriff explained the two buildings are the beginning of a “mental health village.” Childers said the money comes from a state-monitored account in which monies spent in the commissary by inmates is deposited. Each 975 square feet structure will be used to host counselors and mental health professionals as they meet with inmates being housed in or released from the Ray County Jail, he said. Childers is only allowed to spend monies on projects intended to help inmates.
