Phone call leads to dog hoarders

One phone call led Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers to a dog hoarder house on Aug. 13 in Rayville. What was originally thought to be a 50-dog rescue quickly turned into a 70-dog rescue, with one dog adopting the sheriff. Childers received a call about dog fighting in a backyard, he said. Concerned neighbors called Childers because they, having dogs of their own, were fearful for their safety and the animals’, he said. The neighbors that called mentioned there were five or six dogs in the backyard then. Childers drove to the house in question to find an elderly couple living in the house, who explained that they had around 50 dogs: 25 chihuahua-breeds and 25 American bulldog-breeds. The couple was seeking help, he said. Childers discussed measures with the elderly couple, saying he could help but under special circumstances.
